Geography of China:
China is possibly the third largest country in the world, very close to the size of the United States. Being such a huge country, it has many different geographical features. The eastern half of the country is full of fertile lowlands, foothills and mountains, even deserts. The western half is full of deep basins, and plateaus and other highlands. To the south, there is the huge Tibetan Plateau, which is the highest and largest plateau in the world. North of this plateau are the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts, which stretch to the northern Chinese border. Below the plateau are the Himalayas and other mountain ranges that stretch east-west. China has a very diverse geography.
The geography of China is important to the characters of Joy Luck Club who are from China, because it is where they grew up. For Jing-Mei's mother, Suyan, it is especially important because she hid in Kweilin, in southeastern China. The older characters come from all over China, and their personal stories tell of the differences in geography where they lived.
